Well, it's been about a year since I've last blogged. Oops. Last year was very tumultuous for our school...we had a new, extremely demanding ridiculous schedule that threw all the Specials teachers for a loop (3, K, 2, 4, 1, 5...all back to back with no passing time in between). I know there are worse schedules out there, but between that and absorbing 17 behavior students from another school we just had a really rough year. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm going to be better this year, starting today! HA!</div>

I have never done a "theme" before. My two boys are SO into Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles at home and I was TRYING to explain where their names came from this summer to them...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Deaf ears, I tell ya.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Anyways, I digress. So this year's theme is "Turtle-y Awesome" and this is my main bulletin board in the hallway. I bought the little Ninja Turtle masks from Wal-Mart in the party section and added a quick bio about each turtle....er...artist.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I made this sign for my classroom door..Ninjas Only!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here are my table colors. I made little turtles for each table and each has a different colored mask. When my students walk in, I give them a colored piece of paper and they have to match it up with the turtle's mask and sit at that table. This is how I determine their "assigned" seats.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I found this cute little ninja printable <a href="http://www.kindergartenworks.com/classroom-management/simple-hallway-transitions-classroom-management/">here</a> and thought it would be a good transition sign for my exit door. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is my schedule, but more importantly I used twin-sized bed sheets as my bulletin board paper! I don't know about ya'all, but we have to use fire-retardant fabric on our bulletin boards (oh yes, the Fire Marshall checks!) and kids' bedsheets are flame-resistant. Now you know!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjMz2TIuX3-u3gpBz1ZZ3kQQVXhp7e7a37T5r8X1eJj9R2hRVOvpF3mJ2avFpS3V_GVzmASkk6ce5QUClkbNUs4Hrhs8Jjxm_Ssox6auGI457Q72dZ9iepjeu60P3LJsBuCqxBJAi9XPU/s1600/IMG_4123.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjMz2TIuX3-u3gpBz1ZZ3kQQVXhp7e7a37T5r8X1eJj9R2hRVOvpF3mJ2avFpS3V_GVzmASkk6ce5QUClkbNUs4Hrhs8Jjxm_Ssox6auGI457Q72dZ9iepjeu60P3LJsBuCqxBJAi9XPU/s320/IMG_4123.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And last, I found this hilarious graphic online and had it blown up into a poster at FedEx. It was a little pricey (and when I had it laminated it got wrinkly...UGH!) but I think it's hilarious and hopefully by the end of the year my students will appreciate it!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_lc8sDBvT_LYqGn9AU4VMMchJ3D6dK5PtCNqwVYEYhr2DD2ApN1GmXu5wgGZ_rxpOyRg34MAmTLvMSWIfdvuNHdw-3_qh1r3GxItMZ3A1WaFcJ13EkybCi9_iVISIRrbrxKGc3IEn3oM/s1600/ninjas.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_lc8sDBvT_LYqGn9AU4VMMchJ3D6dK5PtCNqwVYEYhr2DD2ApN1GmXu5wgGZ_rxpOyRg34MAmTLvMSWIfdvuNHdw-3_qh1r3GxItMZ3A1WaFcJ13EkybCi9_iVISIRrbrxKGc3IEn3oM/s320/ninjas.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So just what am I going to do with this "theme"? I could hardly teach an entire year of Renaissance Art (well, I mean I could but I think my students would fall asleep...no offense to you Renaissance lovers!) so I am going to introduce one Artist each quarter. We are going to start out with Michaelangelo. For my 2-5th graders I am going to have them do the standard "Sistene Chapel" lesson on the first day of school. I figure after the seating, rules, expectations, etc this will be a good 20-minute filler lesson. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For my kids K-1 I am going to give them each a white paper plate, a dab of blue and yellow finger paint so they can make green, then add a ninja mask for their "art ninjas". I will post the project(s) in a different post. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I am excited about this school year and excited to blog again and share our crazy art journey with you! Have a great beginning of the year!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This was one of those projects this year that my fifth graders LOVED. Consequently, so did all of my other grade levels and now they can't wait to make them too! I saw this idea on <a href="http://cassiestephens.blogspot.com/2013/04/in-art-room-tree-weaving-with-third.html">Pinterest</a> and she originally used large macrame hoops as the loom. She then simplified it down and used Chinette plates (which work out JUST fine, though the hoops are absolutely gorgeous!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQDY0ondKBEfwmASE3dx5s60uH9lhq5GIdZwIhlvR_sCTWZ4beli7Sh1wN_Gt8k2dsJTaDGOY2C0AslMz12DFqnpi8GQW6YcaYCn_wb4zPBvdOsDst-l8SPW-5f8_vVu2dqPMUZlcVnHU/s1600/weaving.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQDY0ondKBEfwmASE3dx5s60uH9lhq5GIdZwIhlvR_sCTWZ4beli7Sh1wN_Gt8k2dsJTaDGOY2C0AslMz12DFqnpi8GQW6YcaYCn_wb4zPBvdOsDst-l8SPW-5f8_vVu2dqPMUZlcVnHU/s320/weaving.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We started by painting a simple landscape on the plate with tempera paints. When they were dried I gave them a cutting template with 9 cuts on the top and 2 on the bottom to string the loom for the "tree".</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYHtnHpPA8tieZJ3-cVo3dKRxSkAfvqCSdBi0WpO7-HWEJ22tBM2bLUe_KWJZc0PIMw7NEw9ZtmnHQZMSqrbX0l2nuMrEYtzY88gtpXFmFgAmtwZM5PLZPBIPpQfRFPRiVCGlBJHR6-rQ/s1600/weaving-4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYHtnHpPA8tieZJ3-cVo3dKRxSkAfvqCSdBi0WpO7-HWEJ22tBM2bLUe_KWJZc0PIMw7NEw9ZtmnHQZMSqrbX0l2nuMrEYtzY88gtpXFmFgAmtwZM5PLZPBIPpQfRFPRiVCGlBJHR6-rQ/s320/weaving-4.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I brought all my kids down to the floor for this. Once you get all the yarn strung from top to bottom, you then pull your last piece down about halfway and wrap it around and around and around to create the "trunk" of the tree. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
(you can see how the trunk is wrapped here. When you are finished wrapping, tie the end off on the bottom to secure it. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I gave my students options as to which yarn they could weave...fall colors in this case. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_A5kVFvrOsb1-LKqceITkHp4ecgAb1LQdOeja5CppdmkB07nDt-S9WF4z7emiptxGmnMTf9VdGDxm1pManUNv7m3GbJnqV_TP6LzuBkF3FLbRclMXvXJlEUPkq_QTjIgZ3cTARbloaGU/s1600/weaving2-4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_A5kVFvrOsb1-LKqceITkHp4ecgAb1LQdOeja5CppdmkB07nDt-S9WF4z7emiptxGmnMTf9VdGDxm1pManUNv7m3GbJnqV_TP6LzuBkF3FLbRclMXvXJlEUPkq_QTjIgZ3cTARbloaGU/s320/weaving2-4.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Honestly, the hardest part of this project is stringing the "loom". Once you have that, you're good to go!</div>

There is no doubt that this is one of my all-time favorite lessons to teach at the Florida Art Education Association Conference! Maybe someday if I have enough guts I'll teach it at NAEA too! It is such a wonderful lesson that marries culture with art-making with a sprinkle of Common Core on top!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
(If you would like to see the list of materials to use and how to assemble the dolls, please visit one of my previous posts about this lesson <a href="http://ourartlately.blogspot.com/2010/10/ndebele-dolls.html">here</a>.)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Of cousre doing this lesson with teachers rather than students has it's advantages- teachers can sew and are just more careful and thoughtful with materials and ideas. Students still do a nice job with these, though! This particular doll (above) was created by a teacher who spent her childhood growing up in Jamaica, hence the beautiful colored fabric she used for her skirt!</div>

If you are interested in teaching this lesson in your art class (it is adaptable to ALL levels...even adults!) you can get the PowerPoint at <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Ndebele-Doll-Powerpoint-1491101">Teachers Pay Teachers</a>!</div>

Please forgive me, life has gotten away from me for the past couple of months...and now we're in Art Show season and sometimes I feel like life is getting away from me!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A couple of weeks ago, our school participated in the most amazing community art project, and I wanted to share it with you!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5tL1ssrV0FmN1-WmgJIBXmU7jrxWYbfea7wIGnkNdJQtWBc6sxR-wJMnxYqfjmNM5V9aAgdNLMSt3nApcrtc8ET7DEFvIuRwJm_W_K03F-iXzx2TmTxcHYQQxIdzrKyC8e_0GCox02acC/s1600/final_gator_AFTS_canvas.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" closure_lm_767135="null" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5tL1ssrV0FmN1-WmgJIBXmU7jrxWYbfea7wIGnkNdJQtWBc6sxR-wJMnxYqfjmNM5V9aAgdNLMSt3nApcrtc8ET7DEFvIuRwJm_W_K03F-iXzx2TmTxcHYQQxIdzrKyC8e_0GCox02acC/s1600/final_gator_AFTS_canvas.jpg" height="320" width="258" yta="true" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
(Look closely, the "paint" on this alligator is made up of about 750 students and staff members at our school!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We worked with Daniel Dancer, an aerial artist from Oregon to create this jumbo-sized work of art on our soccer field. It was a true test of patience, collaboration, and community to pull the whole thing off! It is called "Art For the Sky"- a program that teaches children to utilize donated, post-consumer goods to create a giant, living painting using people. I worked closely with Mr. Dancer to design our project, which will be prominently displayed in our hallways for the next 40 years!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
One of the teachings of Art for the Sky was that of "impermanence"...that this project is not forever. All of the materials we used will either be absorbed into the Earth or back into our community. The alligator's teeth were created using sand from our beach.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3HyKVjUf8ugyPR15CUprukAsFPaNp2bIP12tVZCw9Mxb6j30ajibog5wdBo0zfWbG8E8oXbDScb0K2Zh7u8X2P7SLGuuF2a2jy9TZ1wwaIoSoAkaRm2He2hpnErrAfgiTqEVXcoatdXyQ/s1600/AFTS15.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" closure_lm_767135="null" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3HyKVjUf8ugyPR15CUprukAsFPaNp2bIP12tVZCw9Mxb6j30ajibog5wdBo0zfWbG8E8oXbDScb0K2Zh7u8X2P7SLGuuF2a2jy9TZ1wwaIoSoAkaRm2He2hpnErrAfgiTqEVXcoatdXyQ/s1600/AFTS15.jpg" height="213" width="320" yta="true" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The water that made up the alligator's habitat was made up of over 500 pairs of jeans donated by our students and families. When the project was over, we donated the jeans to our local Salvation Army and to a local church who will be making them into shoes to send to Africa. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Black mulch was used to outline our design, and red and yellow t-shirts made up the inside of the mouth and the eye. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Finally it was time to call out the troops- all 650 students and 75 staff members to make up the "paint" of the alligator! We were lucky enough to have a local fire department bring their ladder truck so we could get the aerial shot. All our students crouched down and held it for about 5 minutes...and...</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
WE DID IT! It was such a great experience...to be a part of the whole, a symbolic piece of this school, and a memory for many years to come!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have just started an Eric Carle unit with my Kindergartners and First Graders! Eric Carle is one of my favorite artists, so I was so excited to start this unit with them.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I showed them pieces and parts of the movie "Eric Carle: Picture Writer", focusing on the parts where he makes his painted papers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So, I loaded up the tables with different colored bright paints, texture rollers, and big brushes and let the kids go to town making some painted paper.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-WVZJIbuFmskaoMkkbEbrnIxhSYaP3T5TVS-sAwIpbR4b58hn65ftVMTqPVx3f5rnDTzneTsJmB_2TGoq4xJvCHJM26gQTEbFmHgnnOV-aUcLLPDCBz_ocUfDaG6QTHKDLRN9c0kTG04/s1600/spider3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-WVZJIbuFmskaoMkkbEbrnIxhSYaP3T5TVS-sAwIpbR4b58hn65ftVMTqPVx3f5rnDTzneTsJmB_2TGoq4xJvCHJM26gQTEbFmHgnnOV-aUcLLPDCBz_ocUfDaG6QTHKDLRN9c0kTG04/s320/spider3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The next day we read Eric Carle's book "The Very Busy Spider" and discussed the theme of WORK! To begin with, we made webs on black paper with white crayon (make a big X on a paper and make circles around the intersection...easy peasy way to make a web!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgo5ygqI6VZa1KOVWJ0KIja7zsureLWA2sqcou5eg_B9MPiOr_UG8adp_H7haS-PbOqP7EZniMutAAsLVYIegULHIsIC8HzFlVrYaY60jqSiAYIww-bdYLkvE8o6cGdEJLrCtNFAO4mxfc/s1600/spider2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgo5ygqI6VZa1KOVWJ0KIja7zsureLWA2sqcou5eg_B9MPiOr_UG8adp_H7haS-PbOqP7EZniMutAAsLVYIegULHIsIC8HzFlVrYaY60jqSiAYIww-bdYLkvE8o6cGdEJLrCtNFAO4mxfc/s320/spider2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
They then used their painted papers (I cut them down into smaller pieces and passed them out randomly!) to cut out a body (large circle), head (small circle), and 8 skinny legs. This week we were focusing on scissor techniques.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2E2MQq4vs86v4qq3weWuWXzwtIm9wHFg_IjHMII7vGjva3fhYTLj7SnbyW0d-74LxqpyVX6IZpcWSvoy2tfIJBw0FlcavNLNBSpDM9NvCQ9UnziGXy79Gz07nDay7ZZzeduClSCv90-E/s1600/spider4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2E2MQq4vs86v4qq3weWuWXzwtIm9wHFg_IjHMII7vGjva3fhYTLj7SnbyW0d-74LxqpyVX6IZpcWSvoy2tfIJBw0FlcavNLNBSpDM9NvCQ9UnziGXy79Gz07nDay7ZZzeduClSCv90-E/s320/spider4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Lastly, we used googly-eyes for the eyes on our spiders! Everything is better when a googly eye is involved! (I had a parent donate literally 5,000 eyes...better use them up!)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

This was a dandy of a little art lesson based on color theory and (*GASP!*)<i> writing. </i>That's right, folks...descriptive writing in the art room. This attention-getter was the first 5-minute lesson I used in my unit on color with my fourth graders. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
First of all, NO I AM NOT CRAZY. The title of this post sounds just as fun as it actually was...and it wasn't messy at ALL!! I am a firm believer to teach kids to be creative with everyday objects and things they could easily find in their house or in the garbage. My students had a BALL with this project and I loved their results!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVE-aEUlXBMZ97F-9OOMuIeVpzG7MTWQyyuywXdWn5zH1XCsggQllzjGX2cnfVaN3HBA3qEFoUWAyBvugICIXzwWW53Z1RZFNQ_5pP8hLm1Vcx3ZbFecAtNGg3AExE0a3IGWAt7hqviE8/s1600/MarshmallowStamping-4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVE-aEUlXBMZ97F-9OOMuIeVpzG7MTWQyyuywXdWn5zH1XCsggQllzjGX2cnfVaN3HBA3qEFoUWAyBvugICIXzwWW53Z1RZFNQ_5pP8hLm1Vcx3ZbFecAtNGg3AExE0a3IGWAt7hqviE8/s320/MarshmallowStamping-4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
First, we read the book "Leaf Man" by Lois Ehlert. I know that most of you reading this are from areas where leaves change with the seasons. Here in Florida we do not see "color" on the trees, so this is sort of a foreign concept to my kiddos. Reading "Leaf Man" allows students to see real, colorful leaves in all their glory. So, we talk about that.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjS_VrzbFNeDow200vN5OY8_Zr1Ty25JfmxO92lssSUVa_XIG2HheE6hzAUe-qsLpsGWXcQbs8AiAUblUdXW-iT__GxxO6YXNoqPw9Tz1XbqzBtsKBax3XSuE-ceBCG_z0qd0_fLUL8aqI/s1600/MarshmallowStamping-5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjS_VrzbFNeDow200vN5OY8_Zr1Ty25JfmxO92lssSUVa_XIG2HheE6hzAUe-qsLpsGWXcQbs8AiAUblUdXW-iT__GxxO6YXNoqPw9Tz1XbqzBtsKBax3XSuE-ceBCG_z0qd0_fLUL8aqI/s320/MarshmallowStamping-5.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Next, I taught my Kindergartners to make "Y" trees. If you are not familiar with this, it is SUPER easy to teach them how to make good looking trees without making "broccoli" trees (as I call them, the ones with the puffy green tops.) Start with a giant letter Y and make smaller Y's off the top. Voila, a good-looking tree that isn't cartoon-ish or broccoli-ish.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I then gave each table a plate of red, orange, and yellow tempera paint. I put 3 marshmallows on short skewers and had the kids go to town filling up their fall tree with "leaves". The way the marshmallows bounce off the page is just SO much fun!</div>

I used the jumbo marshmallows. You do not have to do this, though. You could easily use mini marshmallows and use a toothpick instead of a skewer. This was just a matter of personal choice!</div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
They really had SO MUCH FUN, and even though everyone did the exact same process, all the results were different, which is what I LOVE about Kindergarten art. It is just so honest and natural...</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
...and they are always THRILLED with their results! "I DID IT...LOOK HOW AWESOME THIS IS!!!" are exclamations I hear daily with my Kindergartners.</div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpUCyLWuSMthwzyfMT4NY2bj48BZLwAC56vrf5MLV6SKefa6_Z1-cJM0y6ntqcWKS7i07n6qS3DmK2YDt09CNK5o7pmHIZlX0LVQ0GRcTaz0QLg458FWXBwPoh50W6QEOZ_hSD0V5zTos/s1600/projects1-15.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpUCyLWuSMthwzyfMT4NY2bj48BZLwAC56vrf5MLV6SKefa6_Z1-cJM0y6ntqcWKS7i07n6qS3DmK2YDt09CNK5o7pmHIZlX0LVQ0GRcTaz0QLg458FWXBwPoh50W6QEOZ_hSD0V5zTos/s320/projects1-15.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This summer I was contacted to review a book called<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Too-Much-Glue-Jason-Lefebvre/dp/1936261278/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1378863567&sr=8-1&keywords=Too+Much+Glue"> "Too Much Glue" by Jason Lefebvre</a> and I jumped at the chance! The illustrations by Zac Retz were so adorable, and the issue of "too much glue" runs rampant in my classroom. I've blogged about it a <a href="http://ourartlately.blogspot.com/2012/01/glue-u.html">couple of times</a> and have yet to find an awesome permanent solution.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I digress.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Just like Matty in the book embraces his love of glue and turns it into a "masterpiece", I embraced my Kindergartners love of piling glue onto paper and had them make their own gluey masterpieces!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
First, we used glue to make wiggly, squiggly, criss-crossed lines of glue (not puddles!) on our 9x12 black paper.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYbQFGcuZ-E3ZqfvY_kNE2c3f5_x8bJ7cdF9jDNUMj7HRKwCTW5XJ8iYHHmUHw5GdafnSpXSsnfRv0MButjILzHt0vuxCgFShutRT7PLBt4E0qRCZjoIbzAfZjEr3fZqIcpjoBiBGoEKo/s1600/projects1-18.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYbQFGcuZ-E3ZqfvY_kNE2c3f5_x8bJ7cdF9jDNUMj7HRKwCTW5XJ8iYHHmUHw5GdafnSpXSsnfRv0MButjILzHt0vuxCgFShutRT7PLBt4E0qRCZjoIbzAfZjEr3fZqIcpjoBiBGoEKo/s320/projects1-18.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Next, we let them dry for 24 hours (in my case, they picked up the project again the next week since I see my kiddos once per week).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We then used oil pastel to color inside the spaces and shapes the glue lines created. Students had to be careful NOT to go beyond the glue lines (it helps that the glue stays raised on the paper. It gives kind of a "bumper" effect to help students color in the lines.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6knTtrUtO3jSp4SXgAtkMDz4F-dxQ0sj5HJLfSiydaWq6eGwSStf1cb8584DNGnyJ_BjjEyd0FCW8W9CtWa9I1ps2GK-7oSzkTxZPaGanvgfvjldKE1NEaBDRV2bRCw-DmF75aO7YgVI/s1600/projects1-16.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6knTtrUtO3jSp4SXgAtkMDz4F-dxQ0sj5HJLfSiydaWq6eGwSStf1cb8584DNGnyJ_BjjEyd0FCW8W9CtWa9I1ps2GK-7oSzkTxZPaGanvgfvjldKE1NEaBDRV2bRCw-DmF75aO7YgVI/s320/projects1-16.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Students did a GREAT job filling up the entire masterpiece with color!</div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This lesson is an oldie, but a goodie...it was actually one of my very first lessons I taught when I did my fourth graders during my internship 14 years ago! There is quite a bit of prep to this lesson, but the end result is so worth it!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There are 4 "stations" I use for this lesson, and I will explain each one under the accompanying photo.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Before you start anything, though, here are the materials you should have on hand and the papers you should pre-cut for the project!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Materials:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
12x18 paper (background)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
12x12 paper (layer 1)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
12x9 paper (layer 2)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
12x6 paper (layer 3)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
12x3 paper (layer 4)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Watercolor paints</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Bubble wrap</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Printing ink</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Rubbing Alcohol</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Table Salt</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Textured Rollers</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here are the materials for each station:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1mH3fJdYPmHZ9Gor0J9uP-sDU9EMfDU4DdDPzar8_Tjx7w8NyMKBg7B__o5gOQIypLWrLVXkAtYi__8WyhRTpdDmR7U86ob7zoFHFNLVaY9cyJnVmmzGAnB2RiFBK2PMIwPjqZik2yiw/s1600/layeredlandscapes-2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1mH3fJdYPmHZ9Gor0J9uP-sDU9EMfDU4DdDPzar8_Tjx7w8NyMKBg7B__o5gOQIypLWrLVXkAtYi__8WyhRTpdDmR7U86ob7zoFHFNLVaY9cyJnVmmzGAnB2RiFBK2PMIwPjqZik2yiw/s320/layeredlandscapes-2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Station 1: Paint with any color watercolor and drop rubbing alcohol onto the wet paint.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Station 2: Paint with any colors and drop table salt onto the wet paint.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Station 3: Paint with "hot" color scheme and roll with ink and textured rollers on top.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxqCIuYuhW0_cUI2-OJTl2j9aSc_WAiJ14xQBt2ZP8Al10wRgTp_jD51Dfst80WiId7VWouK51TdL4Dku2D0AA1nMCwF_f6hMUM8Kwn8RgfFwxyn7a5FL-PaukSQy95xByL6X1JBMY4Sk/s1600/layeredlandscapes-6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxqCIuYuhW0_cUI2-OJTl2j9aSc_WAiJ14xQBt2ZP8Al10wRgTp_jD51Dfst80WiId7VWouK51TdL4Dku2D0AA1nMCwF_f6hMUM8Kwn8RgfFwxyn7a5FL-PaukSQy95xByL6X1JBMY4Sk/s320/layeredlandscapes-6.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Station 4: Paint with cool colors and use inked bubble wrap to stamp on top.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For the background, I had students use 2 cool colors and the "wet on wet" technique over the entire paper. The sun was created using some random painted paper I had in my art room.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is a project I did with my First Graders and had AMAZING results! I originally saw this idea on Pinterest and decided to take it a couple of steps further.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
First, we read the book <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Jeremy-Draws-Monster-Peter-McCarty/dp/B003NHR8KC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1378230733&sr=8-1&keywords=peter+draws+a+monster">"Jeremy Draws a Monster"</a> by Peter McCarty. I love that book and have used it for<a href="http://ourartlately.blogspot.com/2011/09/organic-shape-monsters.html"> several different lessons</a>. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnCmh4aiMleDKsi6cTRtvDrnD37kSBRMS-l_k9eNKCzYcTjmjG5DYxAPaAysBb4i4W3dh6_1R9tdgARhUt3EvuIUdOyemdynJCnsIS3odLDPei5Hw40FBvqOnSDcZef_2ZtxoPIzjZpNw/s1600/monsters1-2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnCmh4aiMleDKsi6cTRtvDrnD37kSBRMS-l_k9eNKCzYcTjmjG5DYxAPaAysBb4i4W3dh6_1R9tdgARhUt3EvuIUdOyemdynJCnsIS3odLDPei5Hw40FBvqOnSDcZef_2ZtxoPIzjZpNw/s320/monsters1-2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;"><u>Materials:</u></span></b></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
3 bottles of watered-down liquid watercolors (I like the <a href="https://store.schoolspecialty.com/OA_HTML/ibeCCtpItmDspRte.jsp?minisite=10206&item=509087">Sax brand</a>. It's well-priced and very brilliant!!!)</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
1 drinking straw for each child</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Google eyes (not necessary but I had a parent donate about 2,000 of them to me!)</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
black crayon</div>

The <a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=8594901000741988295#editor/target=post;postID=4116697573905847739;onPublishedMenu=allposts;onClosedMenu=allposts;postNum=41;src=postname">elements of creativity PDF</a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I started out by pouring out a small puddle of liquid watercolor paints onto each child's paper. This was the BEST way I could think of to disperse the paints and it worked well!!!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhn7nbLrdFriRvTE_43DmqYk17Mi3Q7MS8SxVIED-UUSjJ76mBPFoKQ6bbtWPh7WxM8ZMf-2Ryp_z1vhTxSPUjOr5NjsQa0A8fzID-KOUwuQ_aSlC9RSryhCgJBfCTjqB5RBnTDknenRMo/s1600/monsters1-4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhn7nbLrdFriRvTE_43DmqYk17Mi3Q7MS8SxVIED-UUSjJ76mBPFoKQ6bbtWPh7WxM8ZMf-2Ryp_z1vhTxSPUjOr5NjsQa0A8fzID-KOUwuQ_aSlC9RSryhCgJBfCTjqB5RBnTDknenRMo/s320/monsters1-4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Students used a straw the blow the puddles out around the paper. They made some very interesting shapes!</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We then used some google-eyes and glued them onto the colorful shapes. *Yes, I did this when the paints were wet. This helped my first graders visualize what they would be creating the following week. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNLgpVQAHxVZmPq2e_cWXaMWQnuTddmNV4TIKc6zaR-vALDEFzZv4XV7WqhKHM8ZmFsqMEaeLdyCmYusd779HtZp_lo6DSQH_ePhZlKyr9-Zg_CZamV8nU-w5gN15UXMHgc9_5aKexngY/s1600/splat_monsters-3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNLgpVQAHxVZmPq2e_cWXaMWQnuTddmNV4TIKc6zaR-vALDEFzZv4XV7WqhKHM8ZmFsqMEaeLdyCmYusd779HtZp_lo6DSQH_ePhZlKyr9-Zg_CZamV8nU-w5gN15UXMHgc9_5aKexngY/s320/splat_monsters-3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We then used the <a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=8594901000741988295#editor/target=post;postID=4116697573905847739;onPublishedMenu=allposts;onClosedMenu=allposts;postNum=41;src=postname">Elements of Creativity PDF</a> and black crayon to help us draw the arms, antennae, horns, mouths, etc that would turn our monsters into some more recognizable creatures. We used the black crayon to draw a background (most kids wanted outer space or stars or a simple patterned background) and a ground. I totally dig how these monsters turned out!</div>

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As I told you in my <a href="http://www.ourartlately.blogspot.com/2013/08/mosaic-names.html">last post</a>, I wanted to switch things up this year on the first day of Art in each grade level. My self-portrait idea was getting stale after 10 years!</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I originally saw <a href="http://artabroad.blogspot.com/2011/08/art-is.html">this idea</a> on <a href="http://www.artabroad.blogspot.com/">www.artabroad.blogspot.com</a> and loved her "Art is...." statements her students made. Ironically, the post was also about having original teaching ideas and not just copying others' ideas. Ahem. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Well, I suppose you could say I'm imitating her idea and not copying?</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It's time for all of us to start incorporating the Common Core Standards into our art lessons, too...so I wanted to start with this lesson this year. It made my students really THINK about what art actually is. We applied literacy and creative thought into these...a total WIN/WIN. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJ1RhBI5ja_tCvILL18YHqlhxfmrxUU9kkCfx3OTTQSfVkwSOnkZP5aiCqZg94FR6JidoFN42fo23TwHMVDdoj_JWkhMgX0Q6SF8oe1m21X6vEMzpeWf9L0VQVlrp24L2ZTU2Squp47BI/s1600/art_is-3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="207" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJ1RhBI5ja_tCvILL18YHqlhxfmrxUU9kkCfx3OTTQSfVkwSOnkZP5aiCqZg94FR6JidoFN42fo23TwHMVDdoj_JWkhMgX0Q6SF8oe1m21X6vEMzpeWf9L0VQVlrp24L2ZTU2Squp47BI/s320/art_is-3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This project was done in two parts...at first, I gave them each a Post-it note and had them write down what art was to them. I created a bulletin board out of those ideas. I also had them write down what art ISN'T...a bit more of an abstract idea (which was very hard for them to write, actually).</div>

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We were "word illustrators" for the day...discussing how important illustrations are to primary students to tell a story. We looked at different illustrators and pondered what books would be like without illustrations (which led to a conversation about chapter books and more colorful and descriptive language which create pictures in your head instead of visually...man, these kids can T.A.L.K!)</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Anyway, students were to come up with ONE word that described what art was to THEM. There were so many words...colorful, creative, imaginative, fun, epic, awesome...</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After they had their word down, they needed to illustrate that word. Colorful sure needed to LOOK colorful. Fun better look fun, and so on...</div>
<br />

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Getting them to think for themselves...using descriptive language...visually illustrating a thought or idea...defining words...HELLO, COMMON CORE. Having students apply an art project to another discipline...golden.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For this project, I simply used 11x17 paper and photocopied it with the words "Art is" on it. I sliced them in half and each student had their own. With discussion, direction, and production time it took about 70-75 minutes. (I have 55-minute classes, so about a class and a half).</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
At the end of the lesson, I read the kids the book <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Art-Bob-Raczka/dp/0761318321/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1314412287&sr=8-1">"Art is" by Bob Raczka</a>. I love the last line in the book "Art is how artists get you to think".</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have done the SAME project with my Kindergartners and first graders for 10 years (before and after self portraits)...I was ready to do something new! Also, it is becoming harder for me to remember all my Kindergartner's names, so alas the idea for this project was born!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We started off reading the book "Lines That Wiggle" by Candace Whitman. LOVE this book. I also love using our bodies to make lines (it's almost like dancing in Art!) after we read. It's a GREAT first day lesson for those squirrel-y K kids!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I had pre-written all my student's names in white crayon on 6"x18" pieces of black paper. I had little containers of cut scrap paper (approximately 1/2" x 1" but you could do square tiles or dots too!) on each table and had them use glue stick to trace the letters of their names and glue the mosaic pieces on. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiH9Ex_JEOC-QfCv_HG9eD81j0xIxkEc9PSl1JzE3qaT4L1quMmzH2eCtPrevyy2l6RAlSN7OvBTwqUcakib6_fEbvTEUAXgKcYeydJZ5G7wX6_iECaCYgATq0wjDvNgC72bb93dqQyaRg/s1600/tile_names-3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiH9Ex_JEOC-QfCv_HG9eD81j0xIxkEc9PSl1JzE3qaT4L1quMmzH2eCtPrevyy2l6RAlSN7OvBTwqUcakib6_fEbvTEUAXgKcYeydJZ5G7wX6_iECaCYgATq0wjDvNgC72bb93dqQyaRg/s320/tile_names-3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Because I hadn't done this project before and didn't time it correctly (AAAACK! Teacher's worst nightmare!) I quickly gave each of them a silver (!!!!!!!!) crayon and had them draw different lines and doodles from the book in the background. Clearly, spiral lines were the favorite!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHhcmtujNhyU2S0fZz2M-GyIxmtMjK98HlnuKj5TOSQNKQ8f4h1bGyy-aVl7yzbeDBhK4YSWW7dTZa2OfTPacfCAy7HJOuSOLWUoV9sfdtjZE2qZGpT9bJPw9tWGa9uuvh_RKev4775Tw/s1600/tile_names.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHhcmtujNhyU2S0fZz2M-GyIxmtMjK98HlnuKj5TOSQNKQ8f4h1bGyy-aVl7yzbeDBhK4YSWW7dTZa2OfTPacfCAy7HJOuSOLWUoV9sfdtjZE2qZGpT9bJPw9tWGa9uuvh_RKev4775Tw/s320/tile_names.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The project? Total success. My kids didn't feel afraid to draw (because we didn't! I've come to realize that my Kindergartners were SOOO afraid to draw on the first day, hence one of the reasons I wanted to switch up my lesson) and everyone came away with a successful, colorful art project.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And I'm starting to learn their names. WIN!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
What do you do on the first day besides talk about rules and procedures?!</div>

Forgive my absence for the last few months! I have been enjoying my kiddos and totally turned off blogging for a bit to recharge my batteries and brain...</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
After a nice summer with my two boys, I'm glad to get back into the classroom with my kiddos this week! My oldest son started VPK on Monday (Pre-Kindergarten) and is totally excited about the things he will learn this year (me too!) I am also excited that he is one year closer to coming to school with ME!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We have some exciting things planned this year and I'm glad to fire the 'ole blog back up and start posting again! Hope you all are having a wonderful beginning to your school year...let's make it the best yet!</div>

My Kindergartners are learning about different genres and styles of art and they recently made these absolutely ADORABLE Pop Art POPsicles! We used a 12x18 sheet of white paper, folded into fourths for the background. Tempera paints were used to paint each section a different color.<br />

Students then used painted papers* to create their POPsicles. For some classes we used real popsicle sticks for the sticks and for some classes we just made them out of strips of paper. Each looked great.<br />
<br />
*<em>Sometimes I have students create painted papers for future use when they have "free draw time" when a project is finished. At this time of the year I usually have a TON of unclaimed (no name) artwork waiting to be claimed. If it is not claimed I cut it up for use as painted paper. Sometimes I have students that move away before a project is finished--- and their work gets cut up, too. Rogue, I know...but it works for us!</em><br />

I have had to get "creative" with some supplies this year...stretching budgets and resources quite thin. Scrimping and scrapping and now I just found out THAT budget is going to be cut in half for next year. Anyone else in the same boat? <br />

I had some faux African printed papers in my cabinet that I usually use for quilt block patterns, but I thought it would be nice to, you know, use them for an AFRICAN project, maybe?!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHpzT80Xzev4xVRhWL-4itptQITZljcqSA9vy47WIK6Qolqh2tOEBgJFd3FjKg6ZYhEbHeu0iRBeiWc_ktG3pdibgTQqRalEZrznt4muUJornY_redujl0XA1s-JvCLPfvuln9wGfIf3Qu/s640/blogger-image-560760127.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="215" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHpzT80Xzev4xVRhWL-4itptQITZljcqSA9vy47WIK6Qolqh2tOEBgJFd3FjKg6ZYhEbHeu0iRBeiWc_ktG3pdibgTQqRalEZrznt4muUJornY_redujl0XA1s-JvCLPfvuln9wGfIf3Qu/s320/blogger-image-560760127.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
I did these with my second graders, and they took two days. On Day 1 we painted a 12x18" paper yellow and orange. We also used the African print papers to cut out the "robes". I had the students use Sharpies to draw a necklace on one robe, a sash on another, and a belt on yet another. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXuX1QbkE8EGPHbncx83ajZSe_0ZAQRT8LgOMk-zcrvmcAkGvB5EnPlt9-CAzIENiVkpabARvNgjQ4-OyBuAUe-WcpJHWa3zxP6QqGmnD14ADbKcTEpv-Wzt9GSBH1IzhWJDRyLGd2SRWl/s640/blogger-image-1538748313.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="219" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXuX1QbkE8EGPHbncx83ajZSe_0ZAQRT8LgOMk-zcrvmcAkGvB5EnPlt9-CAzIENiVkpabARvNgjQ4-OyBuAUe-WcpJHWa3zxP6QqGmnD14ADbKcTEpv-Wzt9GSBH1IzhWJDRyLGd2SRWl/s320/blogger-image-1538748313.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
On Day 2 we used a ruler to draw the "frame" around the edges, glued on the robes, and brought our dancers to life! I did have different criteria for the "frames"- designs had to be geometric in nature, and patterned. Dancers had to have different hairstyles and each needed to be standing in a different position (legs and arms). One of my second graders told me they reminded her of a Kokopelli she has at home (different culture, but they look similar! Nice!!!) I am proud of the way they turned out, so striking in real life!<br />

Note: I have seen a few different versions of these floating around on Artsonia and I love everyone's different interpretation...just like the different interpretations our kids have! Happy Friday, let's dance!</div>

My fifth graders just finished up these zentangled zebras and I JUST LOOOOOOOVE THEM! They were large...about 12x18". I had them draw the zebra head, trace it in black Sharpie, and then zentangle until their hearts were content! </div>

The whole point of a <a href="http://www.zentangle.com/">Zentangle</a> is to create a state of "zen"...I think maybe half of them were in "zen" and the other half were stressed out trying to think of more designs...or finish!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
*If they finished early I had some of them use watercolor on top...will share more of those later!</div>
